The very first incarnation had
Paul attempting minimalist guitar ala the SLITS, Gail Heathcote on
very sparse vocals, a backing tape of Paul's heavy dub bass lines,
Anne-Marie's drums. Paul wearing a rasta hat and Gail in a tutu, tried
to convince an unwilling STOCKPORT audience that this musical concept
could be a way forward - actually it was crap - no one was fooled! The
headlining bands NU-TRIX (being managed at the time by Paul) and the NEW
MILLS band ATTAK could have been accused of being far less imaginative
but more coherent. CURSE also played this gig. Paul started producing
a fanzine "SLUM" and promoting gigs with his NOISE PROMOTIONS around
this time. |

With a name derived from David Attenbrough's book with a frog on the
cover (Paul G is is a notoriously enthusiastic herpetologist) Paul,
(now playing 4 string lead Guitar!!) got together with Phil Simms
(Bass), Gail Heathcote (Vocals) and a drum machine. LIFE ON EARTH quickly
wrote a short set of songs and played their first gig again at OFFERTON
HOUSE, a hospital for people with learning difficulties. The set included
an encore of the DAMNED's classic 'New Rose', and for some inexplicable
reason both Paul and Phil played the gig in old ladies' clothing.

In late '81 the band undertook
a tour of STOCKPORT venues, including MANCHESTER ARMS/ BROOKFIELD/
OFFERTON HOUSE/RED LION/NEW MILLS YOUTH CLUB/NEW MILLS TOWN HALL/
JACKSON'S LANE YOUTH CLUB where the band now rehearsed in the next
room to MANCHESTER group the PASSAGE.

In late '82 LIFE ON EARTH
recorded a demo at BIRCH LANE Studios in DUKINFIELD with ex-PRIMAL,
present CRYSTAL'S HOUSE drummer Anne-Marie guesting. The resulting
three tracks were used (without permission) on a STOCKPORT indie compilation
tape 'STOCKPORT UNDER OCCUPATION' and so when asked to appear at a
gig being videoed for a compilation video, A PUNK COLLECTION, shortly
afterwards, the band declined stating their reasons as 'not wanting
to be pigeonholed' - Actually the band were pissed off from their
previous experience of not being asked for permission to use their
songs on the 'OCCUPATION compilation - although the two projects were
not related. This caused some friction between the band and some STOCKPORT
'punks', particularly NU-TRIX whom Paul had managed briefly in 1981.
A fight occurred at SMUGGLERS when LIFE ON EARTH next played there,
probably precipitated by Paul's opening comment to the spitting punks
at the front that "firstly spitting is unhygienic, secondly they should
realise that Punk had died five years ago!" |
